Marlyne then began to tremble with her whole being.

And her lips quivered and her eyelids vibrated, and her right hand tried to contain the shaking of her left while her short, restless, muscular thighs twitched as if she’d just finished some athletic event.

Me Susane stood up, walked around the table, came closer to Marlyne’s shuddering body.

She saw herself laying her arm on Marlyne’s shoulders, bending her head toward her, murmuring vague words.

She couldn’t touch her.

She’d embraced her not long before, she thought.

So what was that about?

She saw her arm reaching out toward Marlyne.

But she clearly felt her arm not moving at all, she could see that as if it was what she wanted to happen but she knew beyond all doubt that it was her, Me Susane, who was standing there cold and mute, petrified and deeply, irrevocably reproachful before the hiccupping flesh of that woman she couldn’t bring herself even to fleetingly graze with her hand.

That’s no way for Me Susane to behave, she told herself.

She forced herself to raise her arm, she thought she had.

Once again she saw herself embracing Marlyne, patting her back as, even formally, even with disgust, any lawyer would do with her client.

But she couldn’t move, her arms hung straight and stiff at her sides, and, she felt it, her face was frozen in a cold, flat look of aversion.
